Newly Planted Shumard Oak — Watering Guidelines
Your new Shumard Oak needs consistent watering during its first year while the root system becomes established.
First 2 Weeks
– Water every day or every other day, depending on weather and soil moisture.
– Apply approximately 5–10 gallons of water per watering.
– Water slowly at the base of the tree so the root ball becomes thoroughly moist.
– Do not allow water to continuously pool around the trunk.
Weeks 3–8
– Reduce watering to approximately 2–3 times per week.
– Apply approximately 10–15 gallons per watering.
– During periods of extreme Texas heat, increase frequency if the soil is drying quickly.
Months 3–6
– Water approximately 1–2 times per week.
– Apply approximately 15–20 gallons per watering.
– Deep watering is preferable to frequent shallow watering.
Months 6–12
– Gradually transition the tree to a deeper, less-frequent watering schedule.
– During normal weather, water approximately once per week when rainfall is insufficient.
– During prolonged periods of heat or drought, increase watering as needed.
How to Check the Soil
Push your finger or a small screwdriver 2–3 inches into the soil near the root ball.
– Moist soil: Wait before watering.
– Dry soil: Water thoroughly.
– Very dry soil: Increase watering frequency.
Important Texas Heat Guidelines
During periods of temperatures above 95°F, the tree may require additional water. Check the soil more frequently rather than relying strictly on the calendar.
After significant rainfall, reduce or skip watering if the soil is already adequately moist.
Mulch
Maintain approximately 2–3 inches of mulch around the tree to help retain moisture and moderate soil temperature.
Keep mulch 3–6 inches away from the trunk. Do not create a mound of mulch against the trunk.
Important
Do not overwater. The goal is to keep the root zone consistently moist—not saturated.
Proper watering during the first year is one of the most important things you can do to help your Shumard Oak become established and develop a strong root system.
